Dr. Michael D. Fried held an illustrious position as a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Irvine, for more than 35 years.

An inventor as well as mathematician and educator, Dr. Fried held an illustrious position as a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Irvine, for more than 35 years. He began his professional career in Boston, MA, where he worked as an electrical engineer of Allied Research Associates for one year before becoming an engineer at Bell Aerosystems from 1962 to 1964. Three years later, he had the honor of being a visiting researcher at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, and then made his way up the ranks from assistant professor to professor of mathematics at Stony Brook University in a span of five years. In addition to his full-time tenure, he has traveled around the world as a visiting professor of mathematics to universities in countries such as Germany, Israel and Finland, as well as numerous colleges in the United States. He has received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, and fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition, he is an inaugural American Mathematical Society Fellow.

Dr. Fried earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1961. After 3 years as an airspace engineer he then went to University of Michigan, receiving his PhD in Mathematics in 1967. He is known for his extensive and groundbreaking research within his field in areas such as the Galois stratification procedure for the theory of finite fields, conjecture and classification of exceptional covers over finite fields, generalization of Serre's open image theorem, and solution and applications of Davenport's conjuncture. He is also responsible for the description of the precise polynomials usable for cryptography and the invention of modular towers, a translation between the inverse Galois problem and the strong torsion conjecture on abelian varieties.

Alongside his professional endeavors, he has authored five books on topics related to his field, as well as contributed numerous articles to professional journals. He is listed in the 11th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering as well as several editions of Who's Who in America.
