With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Stith has been recognized as vice president emeritus of the American Institute of Physics since 2008, having worked as the vice president of the physics resources center since 1998. Previously, he held such positions as a professor of physics at Ohio State University from 1993 to 1998, a professor and assistant professor with the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1972 to 1993, and a visiting scientist with the United States Air Force Academy from 1976 to 1977. Earlier in his career, Dr. Stith served as an associate engineer at RCA from 1967 to 1969 and an instructor with Virginia State University from 1964 to 1965.

Dr. Stith began his career as a student at Virginia State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1963 and a Master of Science in 1964. He was subsequently commissioned as a second lieutenant with the United States Army during his active service from 1965 to 1967. He continued his studies at the Pennsylvania State University, earning a Doctor of Education in 1972. Dr. Stith returned to the Army in 1972, serving to the rank of colonel prior to honorable discharge in 1993, during which time he received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Virginia State University in 1992.

A respected voice in his community, Dr. Stith has been an active leader in his areas of interest. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the National Society of Black Physicists, he has maintained involvement with the American Institute of Physics. Dr. Stith has been further affiliated with the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technical Education, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Sigma Xi.

Throughout his career, Dr. Stith has been recognized for his contributions. For his military service, he was decorated with the National Defense Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Dr. Stith has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
