Bruno Nettl, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Initially interested in music due to a familial background in the field, Dr. Nettl decided to pursue his profession while taking a music elective in college. His academic training was rigorous: after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in 1950, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the university in 1953 and went on to earn a Master of Arts in library sciences from the University of Michigan in 1960. He has additionally been presented with honorary doctorates from the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Carleton College and Kenyon College. After serving as a faculty member, assistant professor and music librarian at Wayne State University, where he worked from 1953 to 1964, he became chairman of the division of musicology at the University of Illinois. Currently professor emeritus, Dr. Nettl has been a professor of music and anthropology at the university since 1967.

In addition to his work at the University of Illinois and Wayne State University, Dr. Nettl has been a visiting professor at numerous institutions, including Williams College, Washington University in St. Louis, Syracuse University and Harvard University, among many others. He has also been a consultant on ethnomusicology and was a visiting lecturer and Fulbright grantee at Kiel University in Germany from 1956 to 1958. Exhibiting unparalleled knowledge, Dr. Nettl has penned countless written works, including "Theory and Method in Ethnomusicology," published in 1964, "Comparative Musicology and Anthropology of Music," published in 1991, and "Encounters in Ethnomusicology: A Memoir," published in 2002. Due to his professional experience, he was the senior advisory editor for "The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music" and has edited and co-edited several other written works.

Dr. Nettl is notable for his ability to synthetize developments in his field, as demonstrated in "The Study of Ethnomusicology," which has been published in three editions. Due to his accomplishments in the field, he received the Koizumi Prize in Ethnomusicology in 1994, the ACLS Haskins Award in 2012, and the Taichi Award for Traditional Music in 2012. He was also named an honorary professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in 2007. Currently a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Nettl is a member of the Society for Ethnomusicology, for which he was president from 1969 to 1971, and maintains several other memberships and honorary memberships within his professional areas. Also a celebrated Ph.D. advisor, he has been honored in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
