With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer has been recognized as associate professor emeritus of Whittier College since 1999. Prior to her retirement, she was an associate professor of English from 1995 to 1999 and an assistant professor of English from 1983 to 1995. In addition to her primary roles, she was director of the English language program for international students from 1978 to 1986 and director of freshman English from 1972 to 1987. From 1970 to 1972, she was an English instructor, and from 1963 to 1970, she was a general studies instructor. Earlier in her career, Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer was a professor's assistant with the school from 1960 to 1962.

Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer began her career as a student at Whittier College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1956. After obtaining some experience in the field and becomiing inspired by her mentors, she returned to her studies with the school, completing a Master of Arts in sociology in 1971. Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer concluded her studies at California State University, Fullerton, earning a Master of Arts in linguistics in 1976.

A respected voice in her community, Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer has been affiliated with a number of organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She is a member of the Western Literary Association, the American Association of University Women, Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was the secretary of the Whittier Historical Society, and she served as co-chair, chair, vice president, and president of the Friends of the Shannon Center at Whittier College. Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer was the author of "Jessamyn West," and she co-authored "Jessamyn West: A Descriptive and Annotated Bibliography" and "Creative Analysis."

Throughout her career, Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer has been recognized for her achievements. The American Association of University Women gave her Las Distinguidas Award and named her a Gift Honoree, the Friends of the Shannon Center at Whittier College gave her a Dorothea S. Boyd Outstanding Service Award, and Delta Kappa Gamma gave her a Cal State Area XIV Star in Education. Ms. Dahlstrom Farmer has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
