Inspired to become a psychologist at the age of 17, Dr. Smith pursued an education at DePauw University, obtaining a Bachelor of Art. She continued her studies with a Master of Science in teaching, guidance and counseling from the University of Chicago. She concluded her studies at the University of Chicago, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Smith is also licensed as a psychologist in the state of Massachusetts.

Dr. Smith began her career as a guidance counselor at a high school in Illinois as well as the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She further excelled as a counselor of high school students through the Upward Bound program. Holding a professorship at Kennedy-King College, she worked with both Worcester County Counseling Associates and the Valley Adult Counseling Service in Massachusetts. Dr. Smith later served as a consulting psychologist for the Massachusetts Department of Education before venturing into her current position as the director and a psychotherapist at Eastern Shore Associates in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Outside of her primary appointments in the field, Dr. Smith excelled as a workshop presenter at various schools and organizations throughout her community, and a psychologist in the department of pediatrics and psychiatry at St. Vincent's Hospital. Throughout the various positions she's held, Dr. Smith has been most grateful to work with young people as an educator and a guidance counselor. In 1962, she received an Improvement Education grant through the Ford Foundation at the University of Chicago. Most recently, Dr. Smith accepted the Distinguished Alumni Award from DePauw University in 2010.

Civically, Dr. Smith has been an active member of her community for decades. She has been active as a member of her local Critical Incident Stress Management team, a coordinator for the Central Massachusetts Disaster Response Network, a board member and chair of the children's committee for the Area Mental Health & Retardation Board, and a board member of Alumni Affairs at DePauw University. In order to remain abreast of developments in her field, she maintains affiliation with the American Association of Orthopsychiatry, the American Psychological Association, the Massachusetts Psychological Association, the Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing International Association, and the New England Society for Study of Dissociative Orders. Likewise, Dr. Smith has been associated with such organizations as Pi Lambda Theta, Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and the Delta Theta Chi Sorority.
