Dr. Ralph Hingson Recognized as an Industry Expert by Marquis Who's Who

With over 40 years of professional excellence, Dr. Hingson currently serves as director of the division of prevention and epidemiology at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of professor in the department of social behavior sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health from 1986 to 2007. Over the course of his career, he has also held the role of president of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety and has contributed his skills to the National Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the World Health Organization as a consultant for many years. In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Hingson has also acted in several executive roles with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Hingson pursued an education at Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in international relations in 1969. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in 1970. Dr. Hingson concluded his education with a Doctor of Science from Johns Hopkins University in 1974.

A regular contributor of articles to professional journals, Dr. Hingson is particularly proud to have published the study that was the catalyst for the law that made it illegal for people under the age of 21 to drive with a measureable blood alcohol level. Doing significant work with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism on the issue of binge drinking on college campuses, he published an article last year that showed the downturn of alcohol-related unintentional injury deaths in the college population. Furthermore, Dr. Hingson had the first peer-reviewed and published article on the impact of lowering the legal blood alcohol content limit from 1 percent down to 0.08 percent.

For his excellence in his career, Dr. Hingson has received numerous awards and accolades. Most recently, he was presented with a National Institutes of Health Director's Award in 2017 and the Borkenstein Award from the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety in 2016. Additionally, he was the recipient of the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2008 and the Ralph W. Hingson Research in Practice Presidential Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2003, among others. In light of his accomplishments, Dr. Hingson has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
