He has taught at universities domestic and abroad, spoken in the field of humanities and written multiple published works. Dr. Gale's most recent position has been endowed professor of humanities for Kentucky State University from 1988 to 2015.
Before starting his career as an educator, Dr. Gale attended multiple academic institutions. First earning a Bachelor of Arts at Duke University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, in 1963, he then obtained a Master of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1965. Dr. Gale earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California in 1970.
At Missouri Southern State College, Dr. Gale has held the positions of director for the college honors program from 1984 to 1987 as well as professor and head of the English department from 1980 to 1984. He has also worked as an associate professor for the University of Florida from 1974 to 1980. Dr. Gale has taught internationally, teaching as a Fulbright professor for the University of Liberia in Monrovia from 1973 to 1974 and assistant professor for the University of Puerto Rico from 1970 to 1973.
Dr. Gale has also taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, as a full-time associate from 1968 to 1970, and at the University of Southern California as an instructor from 1967 to 1968 and a teaching assistant in 1966. Additionally, he has worked as an English reading assistant for the Los Angeles Metropolitan College from 1965 to 1966.
Dr. Gale has pursued various interests related to his career, attending a summer program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Study Scholarship in 1990, taking students overseas on a Missouri Southern State College Oxford University Study Scholarship in 1987, serving as a consultant and lecturer with the USIS US Speakers Program in 1995, and participating in Project India (USIS cultural exchange tour) in 1964.
Dr. Gale served as a consultant and discussion leader at Actors Theater of Louisville in 2001, and worked as consultant for the Florida Fine Arts Council, the Kentucky Humanities Council, the Kentucky Department of the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Further responsibilities Dr. Gale has undertaken include vice president of the Great Plains Regional Honors Council in 1986 and advisory board director for the Joplin-National Affiliation for Literacy Advancement from 1982 to 1988. He offered his time and talents as a speaker for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Perspectives on the Professions. Dr. Gale was a Danforth Associate from 1976 to 1986, and has been a special advisor for both the Association of Departments of English Annual Salary Survey in 1984 and the Liberian Ministry of Education from 1973 to 1974.
Dr. Gale has contributed to the committees of Frankfort, Kentucky, volunteering his time as a member of the Frankfort Rotary Club, as a discussion leader for the Kentucky Historical Society, and as a mentor at Frankfort High School; of Joplin, Missouri, as an umpire with Joplin Girls' Little League Softball, sideline official for Joplin Boys' Club Girl's Soccer, and judge for the Joplin Globe Regional Spelling Bee; and of Gainesville, Florida, where he was associated with the Florida High School Activities Association, the Middle Florida Officials Association, and the Florida Track Officials Association. Additionally, Dr. Gale served on the Alumni Admissions Committee for Duke University and was a reviewer for seventeen companies and presses, including the University of Tennessee Press, the Pennsylvania State University Press, the Cambridge University Press, and Garland Press.
Dr. Gale held membership with numerous organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, the Modern Language Association, the American Society for Theater Research, and the National Council of Teachers of English. He was also a member of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, the College English Association, the American Literature Association, and the Missouri State Teachers Association.
Dr. Gale was also involved with the Beckett Society, the Mamet Society, the American Humor Studies Association, and the National Collegiate Honors Council. He is a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the Fulbright Alumni Association, and the Southern Association of Africanists. Additionally, Dr. Gale held membership with the American Film Institute, the American Theatre Association, and Chi Delta Pi.
Influential and experienced, Dr. Gale has written numerous works, including 30 books, 74 articles in books, 51 journal articles, 42 essay-reviews, 72 chapters, 29 book reviews, 12 production reviews, 24 creative works and performances, 5 study guides, and has read 53 scholarly and professional papers. His books include "Butter's Going Up: A Critical Analysis of Harold Pinter's Work," "Harold Pinter: An Annotated Bibliography," "S.J. Perelman: An Annotated Bibliography," and "Readings for Today's Writers."
Dr. Gale has used his acumen for language, editing "Harold Pinter: Critical Approaches," "S.J. Perelman: A Critical Study," "Critical Essays on Harold Pinter," and "S.J. Perelman: Critical Essays." He has also edited "Encyclopedia of American Humorists," "Encyclopedia of British Humorists," "West African Folktales," and "Folk Tales of Liberia." Furthermore, Dr. Gale worked as an editor for "Outstanding Stage Monologues and Scenes from the '90s," "The Films of Harold Pinter," and "Sharp Cut: Harold Pinter's Screenplays and the Artistic Process." He also co-authored "Strategies for Managerial Writing" and he served as co-editor of "The Pinter Review" from 1987 to 2010.
"Sharp Cut" received a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for 2003, his play "The Phone Call" was a finalist in Actors Theatre of Louisville's National Ten-Minute Play Contest and the Heidemann Award in 2003, "Outstanding Stage Monologs and Scenes from the '90s" was ranked number one on the Small Press Top 40 list and selected for inclusion on the New York Public Library's 2001 Books for the Teen Age list, and "Butter's Going Up" was nominated for the Theatre Library Association's George Freedley Memorial Award, Explicator Award, and the Commonwealth Club of California Literature Medal.
Lauded for his work, Dr. Gale has been awarded grants from the Frankfort Arts Foundation from 1991 to 2002, the Kentucky Arts Council from 1996 to 1997, the Schoenith Foundation in 1995, the Kentucky Humanities Council in 1992, the National Endowment of the Humanities in 1987, the Danforth Foundation in 1982, and from Indiana University, Kentucky State University, Missouri Southern State College, the University of Florida, and the University of Puerto Rico. He has achieved status as the holder of the first endowed chair at Kentucky State University and as the founding president of the Harold Pinter Society.
