Dr. Lefler grew up in Newton, NC and was graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1955. He was the top male scholar in his class and lettered in four sports. He won the North Carolina American Legion Oratorical Contest and was an Eagle Scout.
Dr. Lefler is a highly esteemed and respected ophthalmologist who was notably a co-founder and partner of Graystone Eye in Hickory, NC, as well as a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959 where he was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa. He was a junior class president and senior class vice-president. In 1963, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the former Bowman Gray School of Medicine, now known as Wake Forest School of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Lefler completed his internship at the former New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, known today as the New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, and his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. He began his medical career as a practicing ophthalmologist in 1969, having subsequently co-founded Graystone Eye in 1974. He retired from Graystone in 2002 as Partner Emeritus and established a free eye clinic at the Cooperative Christian Ministry Health Clinic in Hickory. He worked there until 2016.
In 1961, he married Katherine Webb Davis. They have two daughters: Elizabeth Ashley Wilson in Chapel Hill, NC and Rosemary Kirsten Ririe in Winston-Salem, NC Grandchildren are: Katherine Ririe Heath, Caroline Carswell Ririe, Charlotte Elizabeth Ririe, Wade Bernhardt Wilson and Eleanor Lefler Wilson. They attended the First Presbyterian Church in Hickory where he served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. They were members of Lake Hickory Country Club.
A dilpomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Lefler was a staff member of Catawba Valley Medical Center, Frye Regional Medical Center, Western Carolina Center, Duke Eye Center, and Oteen Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a trustee of Catawba Valley Medical Center from 1990 to 1994 and served as captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. He received two Army commendation medals.
Dr. Lefler was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society, Catawba County Medical Society and Medical Alumni Association of the Wake Forest School of Medicine, for which he also served as president in 1993. He is on the Board of Visitors of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He also served on the Alumni Association Board at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Outside of his career, Dr. Lefler is president of the Resident Council of the Arbor Acres Retirement Community in Winston – Salem, NC. He and his wife of 57 years have made multiple medical mission trips, including five to Africa.
Dr. Lefler has been the recipient of a scholarship from the Wake Forest School of Medicine and a grant for the Duke University Medical Center, as well as the distinguished Service Award from the Medical Alumni Association Board of the Wake Forest School of Medicine. He is the author of "Hereditary Macular Degeneration and Amino-Acidura," which contained the discovery of North Carolina Macular Dystrophy, published in the January 1971 issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology. In light of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Lefler was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
