Lawrence Bechler, a distinguished legal specialist with more than 40 years of experience to his credit, has excelled as a shareholding member with Murphy Desmond, S.C., having been with the firm since 1993. Prior to this, Mr. Bechler had spent years as a partner with Jenswold, Studt, Hanson, Clark & Kaufmann. In his practice, he maintains a focus on municipal, probate, and property tax law. He has extensive experience representing municipal governments, as well as citizens in cases against the government in areas such as zoning, land use, and development laws. He dedicated a great portion of his career to matters involving civil and appellate litigation.

A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mr. Bechler attended The Ohio State University, where he graduated with distinction in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts, followed by a master's degree in 1974. Afterward, Mr. Bechler advanced his formal education with the procurement of a Juris Doctor in 1977 from the University of Wisconsin.

For nearly two decades, beginning in 1977, Mr. Bechler served the Madison-based firm Jenswold, Studt, Hanson, Clark & Kaufmann as a partner. In 1993, he joined Murphy Desmond as a shareholding member. He further serves Murphy Desmond's Municipal Law Practice Group as co-chair.

In addition to his regular practice, Mr. Bechler has maintained an active presence in his local communities. He currently serves as an attorney for the Village of New Glarus, the Town of Lodi, the Town of Brigham, the City of Middleton, the Town of Dekorra, and the Town of Oregon. He also served as president and vice president of the Madison Water Commission, and has held several roles with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, including as vestry person and diocesan representative.

Currently, Mr. Bechler serves as publications director for the American Bar Association State and Local Government Section, where he formerly served as Endowment Chairman (2015-2016). He formerly chaired the State Bar of Wisconsin Administrative and Government Law Section (2007-2008), and is a member of the Dane County Bar Association and the International Municipal Lawyers Association.

In light of his service and achievements, Mr. Bechler has received a number of honors and awards. He was featured among The Best Lawyers in America and named Municipal Lawyer of the Year-Madison for 2012, 2017 and 2019, as well as Litigation-Municipal Lawyer of the Year-Madison in 2016 and 2018 by Best Lawyers. In 2016, he was elected a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor for which only 1 percent of lawyers in each jurisdiction gain eligibility, and he has since become a Life Fellow. The following year, Mr. Bechler was named a fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation. A venerated "Wisconsin Super Lawyer," he holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, as well as a 10.0 Superb rating by Avvo.

Mr. Bechler has practiced before the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. He has been featured in countless editions of Marquis' Who's Who in American Law. In his spare time, he enjoys running and genealogy.
