As an international non-profit lawyer, Dr. Leon Eugene Irish worked in nearly 50 developing countries around the world to create or improve laws for non-profit organizations.

A highly esteemed attorney with more than 30 years of professional experience to his credit, Dr. Irish is currently retired, having most recently served as president of the International Center for Civil Society Law, a position he held from 2002 to 2016. During this time, he also worked as president and chief executive officer of United Way International in 1996-1997 and senior legal consultant for the World Bank from 1997 to 2001.

Dr. Irish's career began in 1967 as law clerk to United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Byron R. White. The following year, he worked as a consultant to the Department of Commerce's Office of Foreign Direct Investment. From 1968 to 1985, Dr. Irish served as a member of Caplin & Drysdale before being named a professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School in 1985. In 1988, he became a partner at Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue, now known as Jones Day, followed by a position as vice president and senior counsel of the Aetna Life and Casualty Company from 1993 to 1995.

In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Irish has served as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown Washington Law School and the Georgetown University Law Center. For thirteen years he was a visiting professor at Central European University in Hungary, and has been a visiting professor at Temple University in Philadelphia and the University of Bologna in Italy since 1969. As an international non-profit lawyer, Dr. Irish worked in nearly 50 developing countries around the world to create or improve laws for non-profit organizations. He has been an officer and director of Enterprise Works/VITA, and Relief International from 1968 to the present. Dr. Irish has also been a member of the Internal Revenue Service's Commissioner Advisory Group and the National Council of the United Nations Association of the United States.

Dr. Irish earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University in 1960, Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan in 1964, and Doctor of Philosophy in law from Oxford University in 1973. He was admitted to practice by the District of Columbia Bar, and the State Bar of California.

Dr. Irish is a member of the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the American Law Institute and the American College of Tax Counsel. He was previously a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, and the International Society for Third-Sector Research. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Irish was selected for inclusion in the 20th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest, as well as multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
