With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Pitkin has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1997. Prior to his retirement, he worked as professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Los Angeles, from 1987 to 1997. Dr. Pitkin previously held a faculty appointment with the University of Iowa, including head of the ob-gyn department from 1977 to 1987.
Dr. Pitkin began his career as a student at the University of Iowa, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1956 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1959, in both cases with honors. He then completed an internship at King County Hospital Seattle from 1959 to 1960, followed by an ob-gyn residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1960 to 1963. Dr. Pitkin is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds Certification of Special Competence in Maternal-Fetal Medicine from that Board.
A respected leader in his community, Dr. Pitkin has been active with a number of organizations. He is a member of the American College of Ob-Gyns and the National Academy of Medicine. He served as the president of the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians, the Society for Gynecological Investigation, and the American Gyn-Ob Society. Dr. Pitkin is also an honorary member of the Germany Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (U.K.). He served as Editor of the medical journal Obstetrics & Gynecology from 1986 to 2001 and is presently Editor Emeritus.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pitkin has been recognized for his contributions to the field. He accepted a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa, a Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Joseph Goldberger Award from the American Medical Association, and the Agnes Higgins Award in Nutrition from the March of Dimes. He was a director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and also of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Pitkin has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
