Dr. Donald John Mastronarde recently accepted the role of vice president of publications and research with the Society for Classical Studies.

Melpomene distinguished professor emeritus of classical languages and literature and now a professor in the graduate school at the University of California (UC) at Berkeley, Dr. Mastronarde taught on campus for 43 fruitful years. Retiring in 2016, he formerly taught as an assistant, associate and full professor of classics and served as chair of the department between 1993 and 2000. Dr. Mastronarde was also the founding director of the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri between 2001 and 2011, a part of the UC Bancroft Library that promotes new research on the largely unstudied Tebtunis Papyri. His research interests over the years have included Greek drama, Greek literature and Greek textual transmission and scholia.

Dr. Mastronarde has written extensively on the ancient Athenian tragedian Euripides and various aspects of ancient drama, including interpretation, staging and dramatic technique, textual studies and commentaries. He notably authored the 1993 textbook "Introduction to Attic Greek," with its second edition published in 2013, as well as several monographs between 1979 and 2010.

Recently accepting the role of vice president of publications and research with the Society for Classical Studies, Dr. Mastronarde formerly served as the organization's editor of monographs. His new position of vice president runs through 2021. Dr. Mastronarde was also recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017.

The recipient of two fellowships through the American Council of Learned Societies in 1978 and 1994, Dr. Mastronarde also received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship in 1984 and a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship in 2001. In 1994, he was honored with a Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit from the Society for Classical Studies. He has been cited in the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education and the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West.

Dr. Mastronarde first became interested in the classics as a high school student while taking a Latin course. Going on to college, he continued to study classics, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in 1969, a second Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from Oxford University in England in 1971, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Toronto in Canada in 1974.
