With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Ambrose is presently a professor and member of the cardiology faculty at the University of California, San Francisco in Fresno, California. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was the chief of cardiology from 2005 to 2017 and program director of the cardiovascular fellowship program from 2007 to 2017 in Fresno. From 1998 to 2003, he was director of the cardiovascular center and professor of medicine at New York Medical College and St. Vincent's Hospital, and from 1982 to 1997, he was a professor and chief of the catheterization laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Earlier in his career, Dr. Ambrose was chief of catheterization at Westchester Medical Center from 1980 to 1982, and he was on the faculty at Mount Sinai Hospital from 1977 to 1980.

Dr. Ambrose began his career as a student at the New York Medical College, where he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1972, graduating as valedictorian. He then joined Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, serving as an intern, residency, and cardiology fellow from 1972 to 1977. Dr. Ambrose is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and he is a diplomate in cardiovascular diseases.

A respected leader in his community, Dr. Ambrose is renowned for his work in medicine and health care. He was instrumental in understanding the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes and the mechanisms of smoking-related cardiovascular disease and thrombosis. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, he has authored 300 paper and book chapters, trained more than 250 cardiology fellows, edited two books and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ambrose has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of an Alumni Medal of Honor from the New York Medical College, he has been named among the Best Doctors in America and received several teaching awards.
