Richard T Jacobsen was honored with an Idaho Excellence in Engineering Education Award from the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers in 2007.

Since 2015, Dr. Jacobsen has worked as the associate vice president for research and the associate director of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies at Idaho State University. A professor of mechanical engineering and the dean of engineering between 2006 and 2010, he previously served at Idaho State University as the executive director of strategic management and research development in the health science center from 2013 to 2015 and as the executive director of research and technology transfer from 2010 to 2012. With a career in academia that spans nearly 50 years, Dr. Jacobsen taught at the University of Idaho between 1964 and 2006 before joining the faculty of Idaho State University.

During his tenure at the University of Idaho, Dr. Jacobsen excelled as the chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the associate director and director of the Center for Applied Thermodynamic Studies, and both the associate dean and dean of the College of Engineering. Between 1989 and 1999, he notably arranged for the funding of the construction of the Engineering and Physics Building and the remodeling of the Gauss, Johnson and Buchanan Engineering laboratories on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow. During the late 1990s, Dr. Jacobsen also led the development of the joint University of Idaho/Boise State University engineering program in Boise, Idaho by preparing three engineering undergraduate programs for accreditation. The joint program was the forerunner of the Boise State University College of Engineering.

Dr. Jacobsen's industry experience included working for Boeing in Seattle, Washington, following completion of his B.S. degree, and later in his career he served as a consultant for the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and as a guest worker for the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado. From late 1999 through 2005, Dr. Jacobsen worked with Bechtel BWXT Idaho LLC, initially holding the post of deputy laboratory director in 1999, as well as lending his expertise to Bechtel BWXT Idaho LLC as an associate laboratory director and as chief scientist of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory until 2005.

Dr. Jacobsen was active on numerous committees and advisory councils, including the Institutional Review Board for protection of human subjects in research with the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Between 1968 and 1999, Dr. Jacobsen was responsible for developing computer models and programs for the calculation of thermodynamic properties for the design and analysis of engineered systems for the production and utilization of energy. He has also authored numerous publications in his field, including a monograph series called "Thermodynamic Properties of Cryogenic Fluids," numerous books, several reports on thermodynamic properties of fluids, and over 60 refereed articles in professional journals. Dr. Jacobsen is additionally affiliated with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as an elected fellow, a life member and the former chair of multiple committees.

Dr. Jacobsen was honored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with an Inland Empire Section Engineer of the Year Award in 1999 and a Dedicated Service Award in 2003. A member and former board director of the Northwest College and University Association for Science and the Idaho Research Foundation, he is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, from which he received an Excellence in Engineering Educator Award in 2007. Furthermore, he has been active as a member of numerous other organizations, including the American Society of Engineering Education, the American Nuclear Society and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Locally, Dr. Jacobsen is involved as a member of the board of trustees for the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls since 2011.

The recipient of several research and travel grants from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Gas Research Institute, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, Dr. Jacobsen has also accepted multiple awards for his work. He was honored with an Idaho Excellence in Engineering Education Award from the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers in 2007 and an Outstanding Engineer Award from Idaho State University in 2002, among others. He has also been featured in more than 60 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West. Furthermore, Dr. Jacobsen holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering science from Washington State University.
