Ruth Stevens Appelhof accepted a Helena Rubinstein fellowship from the Whitney Museum of American Art between 1980 and 1981, which greatly influenced her career path as an art historian and curator.

Since her retirement in 2016, Dr. Appelhof has been recognized as executive director emerita at Guild Hall of East Hampton, N.Y. Noted as one of the first multidisciplinary centers in the country to combine a museum, theater, and education space under one roof, she was initially hired by the cultural arts complex in 1999. During 17 wonderful years of professional excellence, she supervised the museum, the theater and broad based educational programming as the executive director for Guild Hall, working closely with the community as well.
A former director at the Minnesota Museum of Art in St. Paul, MN, and the executive director at both the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT, and the Art Museum of Western Virginia, formerly known as the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts, Dr. Appelhof's extensive background in combining art and diverse communities was significant. Previously sharing her expertise as the chief curator of painting, sculpture and graphic arts at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, she was also the curator of exhibitions at Lowe Art Gallery at Syracuse University and a gallery director at State University of New York's Cayuga Community College. Furthermore, Dr. Appelhof taught as an adjunct professor of art at the University of Alabama in Birmingham from 1984 to 1989, an assistant professor of museology in the graduate division of the School of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University from 1981 to 1984 , and an associate art professor at Cayuga Community College from 1971 to 1980.
Dr. Appelhof has curated numerous exhibitions during her career, beginning in 1983 with "Margaret Bourke-White: The Humanitarian Vision" at the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery at Syracuse University. Other presentations included "Looking South: A Different Dixie" and "The Expressionist Landscape" at the Birmingham Museum of Art, "William Dunlap: Re-Constructed Re-Collections" in Roanoke and "Voices Rising" at the National Museum of Women in the Arts" in Washington, D.C. In addition to her work in the field and her teachings, Dr. Appelhof excelled as a lecturer in her field, speaking on various topics in her area of expertise.
Dr. Appelhof also served as a guest curator at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1998. Furthermore, she has authored multiple articles for scholarly journals and other publications, including the Women's Art Journal and Pulse Magazine between 1980 and 2018. A current member of the board of trustees for the American Federation of the Arts, she has continuously maintained membership with various other professional organizations relative to her field as well, including the New York chapter of ArtTable.
For as far back as she can remember, Dr. Appelhof wanted to be an artist. Attending Syracuse University as an art major, she began taking several studio classes and realized that the literature around the art was equally fascinating. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and art history at Syracuse University in 1965, she soon after began teaching on campus. She later obtained a Master of Arts in art history in 1974, a Master of Philosophy in humanities in 1980 and a Doctor of Philosophy in humanities in 1988, all from Syracuse University.
While pursuing her degrees, Dr. Appelhof accepted a Helena Rubinstein fellowship from the Whitney Museum of American Art between 1980 and 1981, which greatly influenced her career path as an art historian and curator. She since studied at the Museum Management Institute in Boulder, Colo., the Getty MMI at the University of California at Berkeley, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. where she was a fellow at the American Museum, and Columbia University in their non-profit management program. In 2017, she was a visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome, writing a book on the abstract expressionist Lee Krasner. During her career, Dr. Appelhof has been honored in approximately 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women.
