With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Lohr has been a professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina since 1990, also serving as a distinguished professor of pediatrics from 2006 to 2016. In addition to his primary roles, he has served as executive director of the Governor's Institute of Alcohol and Substance Abuse from 1998 to 2007 and a senior clinician at North Carolina Children's Hospital from 2000 to 2002, where he was previously pediatrician-in-chief from 1999 to 2000.

From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Lohr was vice chair of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, having been division chief and associate chair from 1990 to 1998. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a professor at the University of Virginia from 1984 to 1990, simultaneously serving as division chief and associate chair from 1976 to 1990. Earlier in his career, Dr. Lohr was chief resident in the department of pediatrics at the University of Virginia from 1969 to 1970.

Dr. Lohr began his career as a student at the University of North Carolina, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine in 1962 and 1967, respectively. A diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, he also served with the United States Navy from 1970 to 1972, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.

A respected voice in his industry, Dr. Lohr has been active with a number of organizations in his community. He has served as a consultant to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization, and he has contributed articles to professional journals. He is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Pediatric Society.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lohr has been recognized for his contributions. The University of North Carolina has given him the H. Fleming Fuller Award and the Academy of Educators gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award. Furthermore, he received an additional Lifetime Achievement Award and the Denny, Katz, Simon, Tingelstadt Award from the North Carolina Pediatric Society for clinical, teaching and research excellence. The three-time winner of the Department Clinician Award from Pediatric Residents, the organization also honored him with the Department Teaching Award. He was the first pediatrician in the southeast listed in Best Doctors, and he was one of the first three pediatricians in North Carolina listed in Best Doctors as a pediatric hospitalist. Notably, Dr. Lohr has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
