A former Division Manager for the Environmental Monitoring Division in Playa del Rey, CA, between 2002 and 2017 and Environmental Affairs Officer for the Regulatory Affairs Division between 2000 and 2002, Dr. Dojiri's background also includes appointments as a Supervisor and Water Biologist I for the Environmental Monitoring Division between 1989 and 2000.
In earlier years, Dr. Dojiri taught at both California State University, Long Beach, and Georgetown University and was a Museum Technician and Visiting Scholar at the Smithsonian Institution. He also served as a Visiting Scientist at Osnabrück University in Germany, a Research Associate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution), a Research Scientist at Boston University, and a Guest Scientist at Carrie Bow Cay in Belize.
Locally, Dr. Dojiri chaired the Environmental Biology Subcommittee of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, was Vice Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and served as Chair, Vice Chair and Commissioner of the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project in Costa Mesa, CA. He also served on the Governing Board and Strategic Advisory Committee of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System.
During his career, Dr. Dojiri notably discovered one new order, one new family, 14 new genera, and 101 new species that he described and named in peer-reviewed journal articles and two books. Three marine crustaceans have been named in his honor for his many contributions to marine biology. He has also been recognized with a Distinguished Marine Biology Alumnus Award from the California State University, Long Beach, in 2017 and a Hero Award from the March of Dimes from the City of Los Angeles in 2003. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Smithsonian Institution between 1983 and 1984 and he also received several grants from the Southern California Association of Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists and the Smithsonian Institution. He has been cited in the eighth through 10th editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Born in Wakayama-ken, Japan, Dr. Dojiri moved to the United States at the age of 4. Growing up in California, he loved the ocean, a feeling that stuck with him into adulthood. When it was time to attend college, he decided to study marine biology and focus on fish parasitology as a result of taking Dr. Elmer R. Noble's General Parasitology course while attending the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Dr. Dojiri notably holds a Bachelor of Arts from UCSB, Master of Arts from California State University, Long Beach, and Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University. A certified community college instructor in the state of California, he has since become a longstanding member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Married to his wife Jackie Wang-Dojiri, Dr. Dojiri and she share one daughter Stacey Seiko Dojiri. In his free time, he loves to stay active by playing volleyball and exercising. He also loves to fish.
