Robert Marshall Copeland, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Though his career is punctuated with notable accomplishments, Dr. Copeland is particularly proud of conducting a motet of Bach's in the historically-significant St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

An accomplished listee, Dr. Copeland celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. After initially earning a Bachelor of Science from Geneva College in 1966, Dr. Copeland went on to earn a Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cincinnati in 1970 and 1974, respectively. He has also completed some postgraduate work at Westminster Choir College, as well as Emory University. Most recently a professor of music and director of choral activities at Geneva College, where he worked from 1981 to 2012, Dr. Copeland started out as an assistant professor of music at MidAmerica Nazarene University, where he soon advanced to professor. In addition to these accomplishments, he has served as visiting lecturer at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, trustee and secretary of the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and member of the Presbyterian and Reformed Commission on Chaplains and Military Personnel.

Dr. Copeland's written works include "Spare No Exertions," "Isaac Baker Woodbury: The Life and Words of an American Musical Populist," "The Book of Psalms for Singing" and "Tristan: A Novel." He also translated Louis Bourgeois' "Le Droict Chemin de Musique" from French to English, has contributed articles to numerous journals in his field, and was a member of the editorial committee for "The Book of Psalms for Worship" in 2009. Interested in civic outreach, Dr. Copeland is a volunteer chaplain at the Reformed Presbyterian Home in Pittsburgh, PA, and ruling elder of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. Along with his professional and community-related accomplishments, he served the United States Army from 1966 to 1968.

Dr. Copeland was a National Defense Education Act fellow from 1968 to 1971. He won the Excellence in Research Award from Geneva College in 1984 and 1995 and received the Geneva College Distinguished Service Award in 2010. Interested in maintaining connections in his field, Dr. Copeland is a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music and the Society for Ethnomusicology, often serving these organizations in leadership and organizational roles.

Dr. Copeland's decision to pursue music was inspired by his high school band director.
