Working within the forest products laboratory, he has focused his studies on both applied and fundamental investigations while continuing to try and understand the roles of lignin and cellulose-crystallinity in the enzyme hydrolysis of wood, which will have impact on the biofuel economy. He has also focused much attention on the advances in wood cell wall nanostructure, which promotes a better understanding of the complex ultrastructural interactions incorporating cellulose nanofibril, hemicellulose and lignin.

Responsible for discovering new methods for determining cellulose crystallinity, Dr. Agarwal has made multiple other discoveries over the years as well. He has notably discovered methods advancing application of Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of lignin, cellulose, and lignincellulosic biomass, as well as an understanding for the ultrastructure of wood cell wall and the mechanism of mechanical pulp photoyellowing. He has additionally identified the yellowing causing chromophores. As a result of his research, he has authored more than 100 scholarly articles for various professional publications and chapters to several books. With additional expertise as a book editor, he served as an editorial board member for Holzforschung (between 2003 and 2010) and continues to serve on the editorial board of Fibers.

Dr. Agarwal previously taught and served as a research scientist and research fellow at the Institute of Paper Science Technology, formerly known as the Institute of Paper Chemistry, between 1984 and 1989. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Renewable Bioproduct Institute and the science and engineering research council at the University of Durham. Dr. Agarwal has been active as a member of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry, the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society during his career.

Noted for his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Agarwal has been the recipient of an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship and a Leverhulme Trust Science and Engineering Research Council fellowship.
