Dr. Bradley R. Straatsma completed undergraduate education at the University of Michigan (1947) and received the M.D., cum laude, from Yale University School of Medicine (1951). After internship at Yale New Haven Hospital and active duty as a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve, he completed residency at the Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University and fellowships at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Wilmer Ophthalmology Institute of Johns Hopkins University (1959).

In 1959, Dr. Straatsma commenced appointment as associate professor and chief of the Division of Ophthalmology in the Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was appointed Professor (1962), the first director of the Jules Stein Eye Institute (1964), and the first chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology (1968). He retained these positions until stepping down in 1994 and continuing as professor emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology at UCLA.

Pursuing a long-term interest, Dr. Straatsma attended the University of West Los Angeles School of Law and received the J.D., cum laude, (2002). Thereafter, he completed clerkship in United States Federal District Court, Los Angeles (2003).

Within two years after arriving at UCLA in 1959, Dr. Straatsma's discussions with Dr. Jules Stein, founding chairman of Music Corporation of America, Inc. (MCA) and an ophthalmologist, led to Dr. Stein's pledge of financial support for construction of the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. This world-class facility opened in 1966 and has functioned thereafter as a center for ophthalmology basic science and clinical research, patient care, education and community service. Facilities of the Jules Stein Eye Institute were greatly expanded by dedication of the Doris Stein Eye Research Center in 1989 and completion of the Edie and Lew Wasserman Eye Research Center in 2015.

After formation of the NationaL Eye Institute as a separate entity within the National Institutes of Health in 1968, Dr. Straatsma's National Eye Institute service included chairman, Vision Research Program Planning Committee; chairman, National Eye Health Education Program Committee and member (two terms), National Advisory Eye Council.

In his rich academic career, Dr. Straatsma presented more than 50 distinguished lectures including the Edward Jackson Lecture at the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Leadership positions of Dr. Straatsma have included president, American Academy of Ophthalmology; president, American Ophthalmological Society; president, Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology; chairman, American Board of Ophthalmology; editor-in-chief, American Journal of Ophthalmology, president, Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology; and president, Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis.

More than 75 medals and awards received by Dr. Straatsma include the Columbia University Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), honoris causa; American Academy of Ophthalmology Laureate Award; American Ophthalmological Society Lucien Howe Medal; Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis Bernardo Streiff Gold Medal; Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Gold Jose Rizal Medal; Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology Prince Abdulaziz Al Saud Prevention of Blindness Award; Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology Benjamin Boyd Humanitarian Award; and International Council of Ophthalmology Jules Francois Golden Medal and International Duke-Elder Medal.

Dr. Straatsma has previously been selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education and multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
