With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Cowen has been a professor with Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) since 2004, having served IUPUI as the dean of the School of Science from 2004 to 2006. Prior to obtaining these roles, he worked as a mathematics professor at Purdue University from 1978 to 2004. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cowen excelled as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois from 1976 to 1978 and a mathematics instructor for Indiana University from 1969 to 1972.

Dr. Cowen began his career as a student at Indiana University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. He subsequently completed postgraduate work at the University of Warwick in 1968. He later returned to Indiana University, earning a Master of Arts in 1971. Dr. Cowen concluded his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.

A respected voice in his community, Dr. Cowen has authored a number of articles for professional journals. He has been affiliated with several organizations in his areas of expertise, including the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematics Association of America, for which he has also served as president and chair of the Indiana section. Dr. Cowen held the post of the co-chair for Indiana Resolve.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cowen has been recognized for his achievements, having accepted the Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching by the Math Association of America. He has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the Midwest. In his free time, Dr. Cowen enjoys hiking and traveling.
