With more than 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Zipes has been recognized as a distinguished professor of the Indiana University School of Medicine since 1994. Prior to his semi-retirement, he was a professor of medicine, pharmacology and toxicology from 1993 to 2004, director of the cardiology division and Krannert Institute of Cardiology from 1995 to 2004, and a professor of medicine from 1976 to 1994, having joined the school in 1970. Earlier in his career, Dr. Zipes held a fellowship at the Duke University Medical Center from 1966 to 1968, having been a resident in medicine from 1965 to 1966 and an intern in medicine from 1964 to 1965.
Dr. Zipes began his career as a student at Dartmouth College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1961 and a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1962. He then joined Harvard Medical School, where he earned a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, in 1964. Dr. Zipes is a diplomate of cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zipes has been recognized for his contributions, including as a "Sagamore of the Wabash," the highest honor awarded to an Indiana citizen from the Governor of Indiana. The American Heart Association honored him with a Distinguished Achievement Award, a Herrick Award, and a Cor Vitae Award, and the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society gave him a Distinguished Scientist Award and President's Citation/Award. He has also been recognized as a distinguished alumnus by Duke University and Dartmouth Medical School and by Indiana University with the President's Medal.
Dr. Zipes has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
