Robert W. Sledge, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Robert W. Sledge was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award as given by the General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church in 2014.

Sledge, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Sledge celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Sledge was called to pursue his profession of choice while in the Army. Now celebrated for his contributions to the fields of history and theology, he initially earned a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern University, following these accomplishments with a Bachelor of Divinity from SMU and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin. He is the historian-in-residence at the McWhiney History Education Group, where he worked from 2001 to 2018, Dr. Sledge started out as pastor at Buda United Methodist Church. He went on to work as a history instructor at Nebraska Wesleyan University, a history professor at McMurry University and a pastor school instructor at Southern Methodist University. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Texas-Pan American in 1974 and 1976.

Due to his considerable knowledge in his fields of expertise, Dr. Sledge has written several books, including "Hands on the Ark," which won the Jesse Lee Prize in 1972, and "God's Field, God's Building," which won the Kate Warnick Award in 1986. He has also written such works as "A People, A Place: The Story of Abilene," "Five Dollars and Myself: History of Mission of the ME Church," and edited the Heritage Journal. His scholarship and service have resulted in numerous honors, and he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award as given by the General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church in 2014. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Sledge served with the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.

Exhibiting an aptitude for leadership, Dr. Sledge is a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society, for which he has been vice president, national president and national secretary. He was also named the distinguished alumnus by this organization for 2009. He was named to Phi Beta Kappa in 2018. Interested in community involvement, Dr. Sledge was precinct chairman for the Democratic party of Taylor County from 1980 to 1986 and has served the United Methodist Church as chairman of South Central Jurisdiction Committee Archives and History and member of General Commission on Archives and History. He was the founding president of the United Methodist Church Historical Society. Due to his accomplishments, Dr. Sledge has been honored in Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
