Janice Parish Scanlon Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Ms. Scanlon celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. A retired teacher of gifted students, Ms. Scanlon taught at the Washington Township Public Schools in Sewell, New Jersey, from 1983 until her retirement in 1998. Teaching for more than 33 years, she also taught kindergarten at the Jefferson County Public Schools in Lakewood, Colorado, from 1963 to 1981 and the Brewster School District in Kansas from 1962 to 1963. Out of all her many years of teaching, Ms. Scanlon considers her years teaching gifted students to be her favorite. Getting to see her students earning awards at state competitions and being recognized in other ways for their hard work was truly wonderful.

In addition to her primary career responsibilities, Ms. Scanlon was secretary for the New Jersey Teachers of Gifted from 1990 to 1992 and a delegate for the Gifted Teachers to Visit China with People to People International, during 1990. A former president of the Jefferson County Kindergarten Teachers Association, she is a longtime member of the New Jersey Retired Teachers Association, as well as several avocational organizations such as the Columbine Quilt Guild and the Palm Aire Women's Club.

Writing extensively in her field, Ms. Scanlon co-authored "Ruleton and its Schools" and "Adams and Parrish Family" in 2005. She has also authored guides for the Washington Township Schools and the Jefferson County Kindergarten curriculum and was a contributing author of "Teaching Children in Remote Areas." Additionally, Ms. Scanlon has been an actress in several educational films.

Although Ms. Scanlon is no longer teaching, she remains active with several organizations dear to her heart. She has been a presenter of Indian history at St. Martha's Church of the Incarnation's School since 2001 and was an active member of the Democratic Party in Southeast Manatee County, Florida, along with the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Fort Myers, Florida. She was also a member of the Palm Aire Nine Hole Women's Golf Association and was vice president of her local homeowner's association. Ms. Scanlon has received several awards for her excellence in recent years, as well. In 2013, she won the Quilt Challenge First Prize and the Quilt Challenge Most Creative Award by the Columbine Quilt Guild in 2012. She was also the co-recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Volunteer Group Award by Haywood County, North Carolina, and the 2007 Presidential Award from the Palm Aire Nine Hole Women's Golf Association, where she served as vice president and president.

Ms. Scanlon has been cited in close to 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. She notably earned a Bachelor of Science from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, in 1962 and a Master of Arts from the University of Denver in Colorado in 1980. Married for many years until her husband's passing, Ms. Scanlon enjoys spending her free time doing good things for others. She especially enjoyed making quilts and teddy bears for the infirmary and handmade tote bags for abused men and women and also enjoys painting and silk painting, studying genealogy, playing golf and traveling. She makes quilts of valor for wounded veterans.
