In 1974, Mr. Ely earned an Associate of Applied Science in design technology from Mountain Empire Community College. Focused on academic and professional achievement, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in industrial technology from East Tennessee State University in 1977. He currently works as a technical writer for A.O. Smith, a position he has held since 2007, drawing upon recent work as a technical writer and illustrator with Bush Hog, Inc., and Electrolux, Inc.

Mr. Ely commenced his career as a design engineer with Thompson & Litton Engineering, holding this position from 1974 to 1975 before becoming an architectural designer at Rentenbach & Wright, Inc. He went on to work as a technical designer and engineer for Ingersoll-Rand, an architectural designer for Tennessee Eastman Company, and an industrial engineer for UNISYS Corporation, demonstrating considerable expertise in his field. Professionally versatile, Mr. Ely has also served as a film producer. He worked on "Erwin Horror Story" from 2015 to 2016, as well as a rock musical, "Flirting with Azrael," in 2018.

Interested in maintaining connections in his field, Mr. Ely is a member of the Industrial Education Society and the Construction Specifications Institute. He also demonstrates continued involvement with Epsilon Pi Tau. In addition to his primary professional accomplishments, Mr. Ely served to sergeant in the U.S. Army, remaining in service from 1969 to 1971.
