Dr. Somero is the David and Lucile Packard Emeritus Professor of Marine Science at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University. Before his retirement in 2014, he served on this faculty for 21 years and acted as the Director of the Marine Station from 2000 to 2008. Prior to arriving at Stanford, Dr. Somero was the Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology at Oregon State University (1991-1995). His initial faculty appointment, in 1970, was at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography—University of California, San Diego, where he held the John Dove Isaacs Chair in Natural Philosophy. He also chaired the Marine Biology Research Division at Scripps.
Dr. Somero's research career has focused on the adaptations animals make to enable them to function in diverse environments, notably under widely different thermal conditions. He began his studies as a Stanford University Ph.D. student by spending a year in Antarctica studying the mechanisms that enable fishes of the Southern Ocean to thrive at temperatures near the freezing point of sea water. For several decades, his work has focused strongly on proteins. These studies have revealed how changes in protein structure enable these key molecules to modify their thermal optimal and permit life over a wide range of body temperatures. Currently, he is working with collaborators in China on snails that attain body temperatures of 130°F (55°C); these may be the hottest animals on the planet, and their proteins are revealing how resistance to high temperatures evolves—an important type of insight in the context of climate change.
Another major thrust of Dr. Somero's research has been on the small organic molecules that often are highly abundant in cells of organisms that face different types of environmental stress. These small molecules, including sugars, methylammonium compounds and amino acid derivatives, function as potent stabilizers of proteins and, like the evolved changes in the proteins themselves, enable life under extreme conditions. A review of this topic published in the leading journal Science has been cited over 3,500 times.
Dr. Somero has been elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has co-authored four books that focus on biochemical adaptation to the environment. His achievements have been recognized by his inclusion in almost 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West.
Dr. Somero obtained his bachelor's degree from Carleton College in 1962 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1967. He did postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia with Professor Peter Hochachka between 1967 and 1970.
