Displaying educational drive, Mr. McClimon earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Luther College. He went on to earn a Master of Science from St. Cloud State University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Georgetown University. After commencing his career as assistant director of student activities at St. Cloud State University, Mr. McClimon went on to work as performing arts coordinator at Western Illinois University. He then became involved with the National Endowment for the Arts, working as a program specialist, program administrator and law clerk before moving to positions with Webster & Sheffield and the AT&T Foundation, where he served as executive director from 1996 to 2003. He also served as executive director of the Second Stage Theatre from 2003 to 2006 and has been president of the American Express Foundation since 2006.

Originally interested in education, Mr. McClimon became involved with student organizations and found himself drawn to other professional paths. Now known for his work in nonprofit law, he often serves as a speaker at numerous conferences on arts management, fundraising and nonprofit management. He also remains involved as an adjunct professor at New York University, where he has been teaching since 1990, and he is the lead faculty member for the Institute for Corporate Social Responsibility at Johns Hopkins University. Demonstrating considerable knowledgeability in his field, Mr. McClimon has contributed to several professional publications, including the Journal of Law and the Arts, and wrote the textbook chapter "Audiences in the Arts," and he is a contributor to Forbes. Celebrated for their professional impact, all of his endeavors have been motivated by his wish to make a positive impact on the world around him through civil service.

In light of his accomplishments and organizational expertise, Mr. McClimon received a Faculty Award from the Blue Key Honor Society. He also received an Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He is formerly a member of the New York City Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association, and was he admitted to practice law in New York in 1987. His achievements have earned him recognition in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and Who's Who in the World.
