Dr. Jeffrey Steven Gaffney has contributed more than 140 articles to various scholarly journals and 26 book chapters.

Emeritus professor of chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock since 2016, Dr. Gaffney was a tenured faculty member on campus for 10 years, teaching and chairing the department throughout his tenure. His expertise in the field of academia and research spans 40 years. In addition to teaching, Dr. Gaffney was a Senior Chemist at the Argonne National Laboratory between 1989 and 2006. He also worked as a Staff Scientist in INC-7 at the Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1985 and 1988, and was a Research Associate, Associate Chemist, and Chemist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, between 1975 and 1985.

Dr. Gaffney served as the Lead Scientist for the Department of Energy portion of the MILAGRO field study in 2006. A career highlight for him, he worked alongside Dr. Mario Molina, a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, where they attempted to understand the effects of climate change on a megacity. Dr. Gaffney also served as the Chief Scientist and Mentor of more than 90 doctoral students for the Department of Energy Global Change Education Program from 1998 to 2013.

Maintaining research and teaching interests in atmospheric and environmental chemistry, natural radionuclides, stable carbon isotopes and trace metals as tracers, nanomaterials in the environment, climate change, organic chemistry, as well as the development of novel analytical instrumentation, Dr. Gaffney has written extensively in his field as a result. He has contributed more than 140 articles to various scholarly journals and 26 book chapters. He was the editor of "West Suburban Caged Bird Club Newsletter" from 1997 to 2006, was a co-editor for two books, and was the co-author of the 2014 book "Confessions of a Birdaholic" and the 2017 textbook "General Chemistry for Engineers." He plans to release a third book in 2019, titled "Chemistry of Environmental Systems: Fundamental Principles and Analytical Methods" co-authored with Dr. Nancy A. Marley.

A longstanding member of the American Chemical Society, the American Meteorological Society, The American Association for Aerosol Research, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Gaffney has also served on dozens of committees over the past 30 years. More recently, he was Chairman on the Expert Panel Review Committee for the EPA report on "Biofuels and the Environment: The First Triennial Report to Congress" in 2011-2012. He also served on the Argonne National Laboratory Program and Operations Committee on Hiring and Promotion Oversight from 2003 to 2006, as well as the University of Chicago Executive Committee for the Center for Environmental Science between 2002 and 2006. Dr. Gaffney also served as an Associate Member and Member of the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemistry and Public Affairs from 2002 to 2014.

Enjoying the opportunity to serve his community, Dr. Gaffney was a science advisor for the BOCES Summer Program for the Gifted and Talented at Brookhaven National Libraries every year from 1979 to 1985. He was also a troop leader for his local Girl Scouts of America in Sound Bend, NY, between 1981 and 1984 and Program Chairman for the Parent-Teacher Organization in Miller Place, NY, between 1984 and 1985.

Dr. Gaffney received the university-wide UALR Faculty Excellence Award for Public Service in 2015, an Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Public Policy from the American Chemical Society in 2000, and the UALR College of Science Faculty Excellence Award for Research in 2012. In addition to his many awards, he has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Dr. Gaffney notably holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from the University of California, Riverside.

Married to Dr. Nancy A. Marley since 1990, Dr. Gaffney has three children and three grandchildren from a first marriage. In his free time, he enjoys making jewelry and pastel artwork. He also loves breeding exotic birds.
