Dr. Marley has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of chemistry and higher education

Dr. Nancy Alice Marley has authored more than 80 articles and 20 book chapters in various scholarly journals and textbooks.

BENTON, AR, January 23, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Nancy Alice Marley, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Marley celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Retired as a research chemist, Dr. Marley worked for the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois for 18 years. After completing postdoctoral research in 1986-1988 at Los Alamos National Laboratory, she joined Argonne as an Assistant Chemist in 1989 and was promoted to Chemist in 1993, a position she held until 2006. After retiring, Dr. Marley spent another seven years doing research and mentoring graduate students as an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Applied Science at the University of Arkansas until 2013.

Beginning her career more than 40 years ago, Dr. Marley initially worked as a Chemist in the Florida Department of Pollution Control. She later served with the Florida State Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services between 1975 and 1977, followed by the Florida State Department of Environmental Regulation between 1977 and 1979. Dr. Marley later accepted a position as an Advanced Chemist with General Electric between 1984 and 1986 before her postdoctoral tenure with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, followed by her move to Argonne National Laboratory in 1989.

Throughout her career, Dr. Marley has conducted extensive research in the application of analytical spectroscopy to better understanding atmospheric chemistry and photochemistry, the role of aerosols in climate change, and humic acid interactions with metals and radionuclides in surface and ground waters. She held the position of Senior Science Mentor for the U.S. Department of Energy Global Change Education Program from 1998 to 2013. Dr. Marley wrote the final report for the program, which produced 94 doctoral students in many areas of environmental science and global change research and policy.

Dr. Marley was also a co-organizer of the ACS Symposium on Urban Aerosols and Their Impacts, which was held on the second anniversary of September 11, 2001. The symposium was held in New York City by the American Chemical Society. As a result of the symposium, she co-edited the symposium book, in which she further contributed the overview chapter as well as another chapter in "Urban Aerosols and Their Impacts: Lessons Learned from the World Trade Center Tragedy". This publication has been very useful in evaluating the health impacts on first responders and clean-up workers that were exposed to aerosols during and after 9/11/01. Dr. Marley was also affiliated with a large field study called MILAGRO that examined the impacts of a megacity on air quality and climate with the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA and the National Science Foundation during 2006 working with Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Dr. Mario Molina, which remains a highlight of her career.

Writing extensively in her field, Dr. Marley has authored more than 80 articles and 20 book chapters in various scholarly journals and textbooks. She also co-authored with her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Gaffney, the textbook "General Chemistry for Engineers" in 2017. Dr. Marley is currently co-authoring another textbook with Dr. Gaffney, "Chemistry of Environmental Systems: Fundamental Principles and Analytical Methods" which is planned for release in 2019.

A National Science Foundation fellow in 1968 and 1969, Dr. Marley also received a U.S. Department of Energy Appreciation Award in 2006 for her efforts in the Atmospheric Science Program and the Global Change Education Program. She has been selected for inclusion in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Dr. Marley notably earned an undergraduate degree from Jacksonville University in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry from Florida State University in 1984.

Dr. Marley is a longstanding member of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, the American Association for Aerosol Research, the American Chemical Society and the American Meteorological Society. She is also a member of the American Institute of Chemistry, which presented her with a Chemistry Award in 1971. Active in her community in retirement, Dr. Marley recently became a member of the American Orchid Society. Her hobbies include designing and making jewelry, raising orchids, maintaining a salt water reef aquarium, and breeding and training exotic birds. She co-authored and self-published "Confessions of a Birdaholic" with Dr. Gaffney which describes her experiences with raising exotic birds.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Nancy Alice Marley, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
