Dr. Sanford Kimmel displayed his versatility and passion for pediatric medicine as a prolific author and editor.

The first member of his family to attend college, Dr. Kimmel initially considered a career in medical technology or journalism, ultimately deciding on biochemistry. He pursued an education at the Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1971 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1974. Subsequently completing a residency in family medicine at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Dayton, OH, from 1974 to 1977, he worked as an associate residency director at the Grant-Livingston Family Practice Center in Columbus, OH, from 1977 to 1978, having thereafter served as a resident in pediatrics at the Columbus Children's Hospital until 1980.

Commencing upon his professional path as a general pediatrician at Pediatrics Associates in Findlay, OH, from 1980 to 1982, Dr. Kimmel soon found success in academia as an assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Toledo from 1982 to 1990, later holding the posts of an associate professor from 1990 to 2001 and a full professor from 2001 to 2015. During his tenure, Dr. Kimmel also excelled as the chief of staff and a medical director on the main campus at the University of Toledo Medical Center from 2010 until his eventual retirement in 2015.

A noted diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Kimmel remained involved in a number of related endeavors outside of his primary responsibilities. A member of the Ohio Department of Public Health immunization advisory committee since 2010, he was also appointed to the vaccine risk and benefit communications advisory board from 1998 to 2000 and as a panel member and infant expert for the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health from 1992 to 1996. Earlier in his career, he contributed as a postdoctoral fellow faculty member at Michigan State University. Locally involved, Dr. Kimmel previously held the role of president of his local chapter of the American Diabetes Association in the early 1990s, having also been a member of the Toledo chapter of Safe Kids Coalition and Partners for Health Kids.

Likewise, Dr. Kimmel displayed his versatility and passion for pediatric medicine as a prolific author and editor. Having contributed myriad articles to medical journals throughout his career, he was elected as a guest editor of numerous publications, including "Pediatric/Adolescent Medicine in Primary Care" in 1999, "Pediatric Medicine in Primary Care" in 2000, and "Focus on Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine: Family Practice Recertification" between 2002 and 2007. 'Dr. Kimmel also worked as an associate guest editor for "Vaccines Across the Life Span in 2001, 2003, and 2007 as well as guest editor for the Primary Care issues on "Well Child Care" in 1994 and 1995.

In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within his areas of expertise, Dr. Kimmel has maintained involvement with several professional organizations over the years, such as the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, where he was active as the chair of the steering committee on immunization education, the Ohio chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and Phi Beta Kappa. Notably, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has served on multiple committees of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians including as a member of the Board of Directors.

As a testament to his profound success, Dr. Kimmel has accrued myriad accolades. The co-recipient of the Innovative Program Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in 2005, he also accepted the Family Medicine Educator Award from the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians in 2010, which he cites as a career highlight. Additionally, he was presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Medical College of Ohio, now known as the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, in 1996 and 2004.

Married to Sharon Lynn Posey since 1980, Dr. Kimmel is the proud father of two children, Isaac David and Katherine Marie. A native of Scio, OH, he enjoys bicycling and collecting diecast model cars in his spare time. Dr. Kimmel has been named to Best Doctors in America from 2001 through 2016. He been highlighted in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
