With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Kula has held the title of professor emeritus at the Indiana University School of Dentistry since 2017, having previously been the Jarabak Endowed Professor from 2009 to 2017 and chair of orthodontics and oral facial genetics from 2008 to 2017. Prior to obtaining her most recent roles, she was chair of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at the University of Missouri from 1998 to 2007 and an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1998, where she was previously an associate professor in the department of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry from 1992 to 1997. From 1984 to 1992, she was an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, having been an assistant professor from 1979 to 1984. Earlier in her career, Dr. Kula was chairman of the science department at Lexington Catholic High School from 1971 to 1973, where she previously served as a teacher from 1969 to 1971.
Dr. Kula began her career as a student at the University of Dayton, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1966. She continued her studies with the school, receiving a Master of Science in 1972. She then joined the University of Kentucky, completing a Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1977. She later earned a Master of Science from the University of Iowa in 1979. A diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Kula has been certified in orthodontics by the University of Maryland and in pediatric dentistry by the University of Iowa.
A respected voice in her community, Dr. Kula has been active with a number of professional organizations. A fellow of the American College of Dentists, she is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Maryland Academy of Pediatric Dentists, the American Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Education Association, and the American Association of Orthodontists, among many others. She has also been affiliated with the International Association of Dental Research College of Diplomates and the American Board of Orthodontics.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kula has been recognized for her achievements. She is a grantee of the National Institutes of Health, the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and the American Dental Education Association. She has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and chapters as well as edited several professional books. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
