Born in India to a farmer's family, Village Surhupur, Dr. Pathak pursued a Bachelor of Science at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India, where he also went on to earn a Master of Science, a diploma in German language and a Doctor of Philosophy. His thesis focused on the chromosomes of bats. Subsequently, he remained with his alma mater to become a junior research fellow for the Council of Science and Industrial Research, research fellow and senior research associate in the Cytogenetics Laboratory. After gaining a plethora of expertise in his native country of India, Dr. Pathak transferred to the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, as a postdoctoral fellow.

Over the years, Dr. Pathak honed his scientific knowledge and educational prowess through the MD Anderson Cancer Center and within the department of genetics and the department of cancer biology at the University of Texas at Houston, where he currently holds the title of distinguished professor emeritus. Additionally, he has served as an adjunct scientist with the department of genetics for the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, now known as the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, since 1991.

A fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Pathak has published more than 350 articles in scientific journals and more than 20 book chapters and review articles, and helped to launch the careers of more than 35 basic and translational cancer research scientists. With a plethora of industry knowledge at his disposal, he co-edited a book entitled "Multi-Targeted Approach to the Treatment of Cancer" and has served as a reviewer for a plethora of scientific journals, including the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Science, PNAS, USA, and the American Journal of Pathology.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Pathak has earned such awards as the Lifetime Service Award from the Indian American Cancer Network, the Barbara B. Bowman Distinguished Geneticist Award from the Texas Genetics Society, the R.K. Excellence National Medical Oncologist Cancer Care of the Year Award, Distinguished Services Awards through his alma maters, and The Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation Award from the MD Anderson Cancer Center, among myriad others. In his spare time, he encourages and stimulates younger generation scientists in the area of cancer research by giving talks across the globe. In the coming years, Dr. Pathak intends to enjoy his retirement as a distinguished professor emeritus.
