Prior to the University of Washington, he held the Harold and Lillian Moulton Chair and served as co-director of the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute at the University of Southern California (1982-2002). Previously, he held various professorships at Stony Brook University (1976-2002) and Vanderbilt University (1971-1976).

Dr. Dalton earned Bachelor of Science (1965) and Master of Science (1966) degrees from the Honors College of Michigan State University and Master of Art and Doctor of Philosophy (1971) degrees from Harvard University (1971).

As a respected leader in the fields of chemistry and engineering, Dr. Dalton is best known for his work at the interface of electronics and optics, including serving as the Director of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center on Materials and Devices for Information Technology Research. He is the author of over 700 publications including the text "Organic Electro-Optics and Photonics" in 2015. He is an elected Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Materials Research Society (MRS), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Throughout his career, Dr. Dalton has received numerous honors including the National Chemistry of Materials Award (ACS), the Linus Pauling Award and Medal (ACS), the Richard C. Tolman Medal (ACS), the William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers), and the Helmholtz International Award for Excellent Researchers and Managers from Abroad. He has been honored by Larry Dalton Festschrift issue of the Journal of Physical Chemistry (ACS). Dr. Dalton has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the West.
