With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Cooil has excelled as the Dean Samuel B. and Evelyn R. Richmond professor of management for the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University since 2007, for which he has held the post of faculty director of the executive MBA program from 2011 to 2015. Prior to these roles, he worked as a professor at Vanderbilt University from 2006 to 2007, having previously served as an associate professor from 1988 to 2005, an assistant professor from 1982 to 1988, and director of the PhD program from 1988 to 1992. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cooil found success as a dean's fellow and a research and teaching fellow with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1982 and a biostatistician with the Institute of Health Research from 1976 to 1978.
Dr. Cooil initially pursued an education at Stanford University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, with honors, in 1975. He continued his studies with a Master of Science in statistics in 1976, also at Stanford University. Dr. Cooil concluded his academic efforts at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in statistics in 1982.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Cooil has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Management Science, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Statistical Association. Dr. Cooil has also been affiliated with the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science, and the American Marketing Association. He has been elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies and he is a Founding Scientist in the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cooil has been recognized for his accomplishments. The recipient of a Disruptive Innovation Award from Next Generation Marketing Research, he was further presented with an H. Paul Root Award from the Journal of Marketing, the Lehmann Award from the American Marketing Association, and the J. Parker Bursk Prize from the University of Pennsylvania and over a dozen other research and teaching awards. Dr. Cooil has been additionally featured in numerous publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
