In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Cheng has been serving as the director at the Research Center of Wind Power Generation since 2007, the Deputy Director at the Yancheng New Energy Institute of Southeast University between 2011 and 2016. He also served as the Chair of IEEE IAS/PES Nanjing Joint Chapter between 2008 and 2018, the Member of the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of IEEE Magnetics Society in 2017, the Member-at-Large of IEEE Industry Application Society Executive Committee in 2017 and 2018, the Expert Panel Member in the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) between 2008 and 2017. Some of his most notable achievements in the field have included over 120 invention patents such as a stator doubly fed doubly salient brushless dc machine, split-winding doubly salient permanent magnet machine, permanent magnet-reluctance hybrid motor, reluctance motor with a composite solid rotor, a stator doubly fed doubly salient brushless dc machine, a dual-stator superconducting excited field modulation machine, and over 400 peer-reviewed technical journal papers which have received over 12000 citations in Google Scholar.
Dr. Cheng is the author of the 2004 book "Micro-Motors and Systems," which was again released in 2008 and 2014, the 2012 book "Renewable Energy Generation Technology", the 2010 book "Novel Motor Drive Technology for Electrical Vehicles" which was again released in 2015, and the 2018 book "Stator Permanent Magnet Brushless Machines-Theory, Design and Control". He is the Co-Editor of "Encyclopedia of Automotive Engineering": Part 3 Hybrid and Electric Powertrains. Serving on the editorial board for Energy Conversion and Management since 2013, IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications since 2015, CSEE since 2012, and TCES since 2007, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Electrical Engineering since 2015, Guest Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics in 2017-2019 and IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion in 2018-2019, he was also the editor of the Proceeding of International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems in 2005. Furthermore, Dr. Cheng chaired the technical program committee at the International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems in 2005, co-chaired the technical program committee at the International Conference of Electronics Machines and Systems in 2008 and chaired the editing and publications committee at the Ninth International Symposium on Linear Drives Industry Application in 2013. He was the keynote speaker in the International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems in 2015, the International Workshop on Future Power System and Emerging Technologies in 2015 and the International Symposium on New and Renewable Energies in 2018.
The recipient of several awards for his work, Dr. Cheng recently received the Second Prize of the National Technology Invention Award of China in 2016, the First Prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award in 2015, the First Prize of the Natural Science Award from the Education Ministry of China in 2013, the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award in 2018, the Jiangsu Patent Inventor Award, China in 2018, won an IET Premium Award in 2009 and 2014 respectively, a GM Automotive Innovative Talent Award for the University of China in 2007, an Excellence Transportation Award from SAE International in 2006, the Delta Scholar in 2013, and a Silver Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Dr. Cheng has held a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering from Nanjing Institute of Technology since 1982 and 1987, respectively.
