David Dering Meisel, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. David Dering Meisel is a professor emeritus at the State University of New York at Geneseo who taught astronomy and physics on campus for 35 years.

Dr. Meisel is a professor emeritus at the State University of New York at Geneseo who taught astronomy and physics on campus for 35 years. Hired in 1970 as an assistant professor, he later served as an associate professor, full professor and distinguished professor until attaining emeritus status in 2005. Prior to accepting his first position at SUNY Geneseo, he was an assistant professor at the University of Virginia for two years between 1968 and 1970.

Active in his field, Dr. Meisel served as a senior associate at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, from 1977 to 1978 and was the associate director at the C.E.K. Mees Observatory at the University of Rochester from 1988 to 1997. He also spent many years conducting research in his field. He was the recipient of numerous grants as a result from such organizations as the National Science Foundation, NASA and the New York Space Grant Consortium (based at Cornell). Dr. Meisel started Geneseo's participation in 1995 and he received two sub grants from them; one to build an on-campus radio telescope and the other, most recently in 2018, established a muon tomography faculty on campus.

In 2013, Dr. Meisel co-authored the book "Astrophysics through Computation: With Mathematica Support" with Brian Koberlein. The text surveys a series of fundamental problems in astrophysics, both analytically and computationally, for advanced students in physics and astrophysics. Dr. Meisel has contributed multiple articles to various peer-reviewed journals throughout his career as well. During his tenure, he studied helium 10830 in early type stars, interstellar micrometeors and radio-meteor forward scattering, and atmospheric muon tomography using many national and international facilities including Greenbank, WV, Kitt Peak, Arizona, Arecibo, PR, and Kirkuna, Sweden.

Dr. Meisel is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Astronomical Society. He is a longtime executive director of the American Meteor Society and member of the American Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union and The Meteoritical Society.

Over the past near 30 years, Dr. Meisel has been showcased in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. He has notably held a Bachelor of Science in physics from West Virginia University since 1961 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in astronomy from The Ohio State University since 1963 and 1967, respectively. Born in Fairmont, WV, Dr. Meisel later married his wife Carolyn Mae Conrad. He has two children and two grandchildren.
