Curtis Tompkins, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Curtis Tompkins has been the recipient of numerous awards in his industry, including the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's Marvin Agree Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012.

Inspired by formative teachers, Dr. Tompkins initially earned a Bachelor of Science from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg in 1965. He went on to earn a Master of Science from the same institution in 1967 as well as a doctorate from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1971.

Dr. Tompkins started out as an industrial engineer at E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in Richmond, Virginia, where he worked from 1965 to 1967. He worked for the College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology as an instructor from 1968 to 1970, the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville as an associate professor from 1971 to 1977, West Virginia University in Morgantown as a professor and the chairman of the department of industrial engineering from 1977 to 1980, and dean of the College of Engineering from 1980 to 1991. He was president of Michigan Technological University in Houghton from 1991 to 2004.

Upon retiring as MTU's President Emeritus in 2004, Dr. Tompkins became a Senior Executive Service Officer with the United States Department of Transportation and served as director of the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge from 2004 to 2007 and director of the University Transportation Centers Program in Washington, D.C. from 2007 to 2011. He retired in 2011.

Dr. Tompkins served as a member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology from 1981 to 1986, a member of the advisory committee for engineering for the National Science Foundation from 1988 to 1991, and chair of the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan from 1996 to 1998. He is past president and fellow of both the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education. In 1998, he received the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award, the Institute of Industrial Engineers' highest honor. He is also the recipient of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Leadership Award in 2009 and Virginia Tech's Marvin Agee Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Tompkins was co-chairman of West Virginia's Governor's Council on Economic Development and on the board of directors for the Public Land Corporation of West Virginia from 1980 to 1989. He has also done work with United Way National Academy of Volunteerism, the Morgantown Utility Board, the West Virginia Environmental Conference, the Michigan Higher Education Assistance Authority and the Michigan Higher Education Student Loan Authority, along with several other community associations. Dr. Tompkins has been honored in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
