Dr. Andrews initially earned a Bachelor of Science from Baylor University in 1966, following this accomplishment with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma in 1970. Involved with the health care industry for more than four decades, he is a diplomte with the American Board of Internal Medicine and is currently a David Ross Boyd professor as well as a Regents' professor at the University of Oklahoma. After starting out as a resident in internal medicine in 1971 and 1974, he went on to work as an assistant professor, associate professor, director of the medicine department's residency program, professor, vice chairman and senior associate dean for academic affairs for the College of Medicine. Dr Andrews' initial work was with John Hopkins Hospital as a resident of internal medicine, and he also served University Hospital in Oklahoma City as chief of staff from 1992 to 1994 and medical director from 1994 to 1996. Recently, he worked for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine as vice president of health affairs and executive dean, holding these positions from 2002 to 2017.

Demonstrating unmatched ability in this field, Dr. Andrews served on the board of directors for the National Commission Certification Physician Assistants from 1995 to 2003, along with working with the American Medical Association from 1980 to 2017 and the Committee on Medical Education from 2009 to 2012. He has also completed considerable civic work throughout his career's duration, having served on the board of directors for University Hospitals Authority & Trust, the Dean McGee Eye Institute and his local chamber orchestra, among other instances of outreach. Due to his considerable professional expertise, Dr. Andrews has contributed articles to numerous journals in his field, and he served as an editor of the Oklahoma State Medical Association Journal from 1991 to 2013.

Motivated by intellectual curiosity as well as a caring nature, Dr. Andrews decided on his career path at a young age. Consistently exhibiting knowledgeability and impressive focus, he is notable for his influence on his students as well as having led a school of medicine for 15 years, a feat resulting in a new academic tower being named in his honor. Dr. Andrews has accumulated several awards due to his excellent professional work, including the Stollerman Award from the University of Tennessee and the Aesculapian Award from the University of Oklahoma's College of Medicine, and his other assorted honors include receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Oklahoma and being named a distinguished service member by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Andrews maintains memberships with several professional organizations, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association. Due to his outstanding work in the medical field, he has been honored in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. In addition to his recent occupational accomplishments, Dr. Andrews served as an EIS officer in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1972 to 1974.
