Marcia Hixson Mahaffey Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Retired as a public school teacher and administrator following 34 years in the field in the state of California, Ms. Mahaffey initially worked as a teacher for the San Lorenzo School District in 1957. She later taught at Castro Valley School District before becoming the school's vice principal between 1961 and 1967. Ms. Mahaffey then excelled at the Sequoia Union High School District as the vice principal from 1967 to 1977 as well as an assistant principal and the principal until her retirement in 1991.

During her tenure in education, Ms. Mahaffey served as a teacher trainer for Project Impact and a member of the Superintendent's Task Force for Dropout Prevention at Sequoia Union High School District from 1986 to 1991. She also held various other roles within the district, including as the chair of the subcommittee on staff development for the Sequoia District Goals Committee, chair of the Grading Committee and mentor of the teacher selection committee. Ms. Mahaffey further contributed to the Sequoia Union high School District on the Stanford Program Development Committee and as the chair of the gifted and talented and the family services board.

The former president and treasurer of the Sequoia District Management Association, Ms. Mahaffey has also been affiliated with multiple other professional organizations throughout her career. She is a charter member of the Library of Congress Associates and member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the White House Historical Association, the Heritage Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center of Scholars and the Society of American Historians, among others. In terms of community involvement, she was active as the chair and co-chair of Roosevelt High School Golden Grads Scholarship Committee. Moreover, she found success as the project director for the Neighborhood Beautification Project, the chair of the Carlmont High School Site Council in Belmont and a supporter of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Ms. Mahaffey was also known for her volunteer work with the American Cancer Society and for teaching Sunday school at the Hope Lutheran Church in San Mateo, CA.

Presented with an Exemplary Service Award from Carlmont High School in 1989 and 1992, Ms. Mahaffey was also recognized as an Outstanding Task Force Chair by the Adopt-A-School Program in San Mateo County in 1990. Many years prior, she was honored as Woman of the Week by Castro Valley in 1967 and Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary. Ms. Mahaffey has been featured in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women between 1989 and 2016.

Ms. Mahaffey initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Washington. She concluded her studies with a Master of Arts in secondary education from the University of Hawaiʻi. Likewise, Ms. Mahaffey is certified as a secondary and elementary teacher and administrator and holds five lifetime credentials through the state of California.
