Supported by 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Warren currently works as the Hanna Holborn Gray Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. At the start of her career, she served as a private art teacher and as a clerical worker for Saint Martin's Press. After earning an M.A. degree at Johns Hopkins University, she taught at Vanderbilt and at Boston University, rising to the position of the Emma MacLachlan Metcalf Professor of the Humanities, University Professor, and Professor of English and Romance Studies at Boston University before joining the faculty at the University of Chicago.

A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Ms. Warren earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and a Master of Arts from Johns Hopkins University. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Philosophical Society, and belongs to the Modern Language Association, the Academy of America Poets, and the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers. Her books of poetry include "Each Leaf Shines Separate," "Stained Glass," "Departure," and "Ghost in a Red Hat." She is author of a book of literary criticism,
"Fables of the Self," and edited an anthology of essays on translation, "Voices from the Field."

For her professional excellence in education, Ms. Warren has been recognized many times, obtaining the Charles E. Clark Award from Yale University, the Lavan Younger Poets Prize from the Academy of American Poets, the Witter Bynner Prize in Poetry from the Academy of Arts and Letters and the Ellen Maria Gorrissen Berlin Prize from the American Academy of Berlin. She has also been featured in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women. Her biography of the French poet Max Jacob is forthcoming from W. W. Norton, and her new book of poems, "So Forth," will appear in 2020.
