Dr. Craven has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of physics and higher education

FAIRBANKS, AK, February 07, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John D. Craven, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Craven celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Teaching at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) between 1991 and 2009, Dr. Craven is currently recognized as a professor emeritus of physics. Knowledgeable in magnetospheric, auroral, and upper atmospheric physics, he also served the University of Alaska Fairbanks as the Physics Department's chairman from 2003 to 2009 and the UAF Faculty Senate president in the 1997-1998 academic year, as well as serving on numerous university governance committees throughout his academic career at UAF. Upon earning his emeritus status, Dr. Craven devoted another three years to serving as the associate dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UAF from 2009 to 2012.

Leading an impressive career on campus, Dr. Craven has not only taught and mentored graduate students, but was able to continue research activities in space physics that he began while still an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa, which included designing, building and calibrating instruments for numerous spacecraft and the scientific analysis of data obtained from many of those missions. While in Alaska, he successfully contributed a sounding rocket instrument for a two-rocket mission to study the Earth's thermospheric winds, which was launched from UAF's rocket range in 2003. He was also lead investigator for a cluster of four rocket flights in 2007 to study thermospheric winds. Overall, Dr. Craven contributed in some way to more than 20 satellite or sounding rocket missions.

Prior to becoming a faculty member at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Dr. Craven excelled as an associate research scientist and research scientist at the University of Iowa between 1969 and 1991. During this time, he played a leading role in the development of three auroral imagers for the Dynamics Explorer mission (that obtained the first time-lapsed auroral images from space) and the analysis of that followed. He was additionally active with numerous NASA review committees, as well as scientific conference throughout his near 50-year long career. Dr. Craven's research has published more than 350 articles for scholarly journals and conference presentations.

For his many achievements, Dr. Craven has been celebrated in the 66th edition of Who's Who in America and the 12th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Attributing much of his success in the field to mentors Professor James Van Allen and Professor Louis Frank of the University of Iowa, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics and mathematics, Master of Science in physics and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Iowa. Enjoying his retirement, Dr. Craven enjoys working in his garden, reading U.S. presidential biographies, studying family genealogy, and most of all, returning to his office at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Geophysical Institute to continue research activities.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, John D. Craven, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
