Health Affects of Asbestos Exposure

Find out about the risks of asbestos exposure

PHILADELPHIA, PA, February 07, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Asbestos is a hazardous material that can be found throughout a home. This substance should be removed by a certified specialist, like First Choice Restoration. If it is not removed or removed improperly then it can lead to some very serious health problems.

However, the risk of disease developing depends on many factors:
-Amount of Asbestos in the air
-How often a person is exposed and for how long
-Time passed since exposure began
-Existing health conditions of the person
-Tobacco usage

So what diseases can a person develop from being exposed to asbestos?

Asbestosis – Asbestosis is a scarring in the lungs caused by asbestos fibers being breathed in. With Asbestosis breathing becomes more difficult as air cannot easily pass through the scarred lungs. This disease is not cancerous and usually occurs in people who have had high exposure over a long period of time to asbestos. The symptoms for this disease may take years to show up.

Pleural Disease – This is a non-cancerous lung that causes a change in the lining that surrounds the lungs and chest cavity. This lining will either get thicker throughout or in isolated areas. With Pleural Disease fluid may also build up around the lungs. Pleural Disease may cause breathing problems or may cause less efficient lung function.

Lung Cancer – This is a malignant tumor that blocks the lung's air passages. Asbestos exposure combined with the use of tobacco greatly increases the risk of a person's chance of developing lung cancer.

Mesothelioma – This is a rare cancer that occurs in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, the abdominal cavity, or linings surrounding other internal organs. Symptoms of this disease may not show up until 30 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos exposure may also cause cancer of the larynx and ovaries. Current studies also show that asbestos exposure may lead to cancer of the pharynx, stomach, and colorectum. It should be noted that once asbestos has entered the lungs there is no way to remove it. However, there are ways to prevent further harm to the lungs.

What are some preventative steps:
-Going for regular exams
-Vaccinating regularly against flu and pneumonia
-Quitting smoking
-Avoiding further exposure to asbestos.
