Andrew Robison, PhD, former Andrew W. Mellon Senior Curator at the National Gallery of Art, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

After initially earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion from Princeton University in 1962, Dr. Robison continued his education with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in theology from Oxford University. A Fulbright research scholar from 1965 to 1966 and a Danforth fellow from 1966 to 1970, he ultimately was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Princeton University in 1974. Beginning his career as a philosophy instructor at the University of Illinois in 1970, Dr. Robison later held the posts of an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Illinois in 1973, eventually turning to museum curation with his professional goals.

Interested in philosophy and theology since his youth, Dr. Robison's passion for art motivated a significant shift in his career path. Notably excelling as the head of the prints and drawings department, he eventually worked as the senior curator for the National Gallery of Art in Washington from 1983 to 1991. In this role, he doubled their collection of prints, drawings and rare illustrated books, contributed significant scholarship and increased both the quantity and the quality of the collections. Eventually designated as the Andrew W. Mellon senior curator in 1991, Dr. Robison retired from his positions at the National Gallery of Art in 2016.

Dr. Robison's written works include "Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Prolegomena to the Princeton Collections," "Paper in Prints," "Giovanni Battista Piranesi, The Early Architectural Fantasies," "A Century of Drawing" and "The Poetry of Light," among many others. He has contributed a number of articles to publications in his industry as well as revisions to relevant literature. Additionally, he has been affiliated with a variety of professional organizations, including the Print Council of America, of which he was president from 1975 to 1981. Demonstrating influence and leadership ability in his industry, Dr. Robison also served on the international editorial advisory board for the Master Drawings Association from 1981, the National Art Advisory Panel of the Internal Revenue Service from 1997, and as president of the International Advisory Committee of Keepers of Public Collections of Graphic Art from 1984 to 1988.

Demonstrating consistent interest in his industry, Dr. Robison collects and seeks out rare books in his free time, with a particular interest in Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Giovanni Batista Piranesi and German artists. He also has a wide interest in 18th century Venetian art. Moreover, Dr. Robison also maintains connections with Ateneo Veneto and Phi Beta Kappa.
