After earning a Bachelor of Science from Pacific Lutheran University in 1962, Dr. Walters went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1966. He commenced his career as a research associate for Cornell University, working in this position from 1966 to 1968, before becoming an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico in 1968. From there, Dr. Walters became an associate professor and a professor of chemistry at the university, working in the latter position from 1985 to 2006. He is currently an emeritus professor, having retired in 2006.

In addition to his work in the academic sphere, Dr. Walters has provided numerous laboratories with his research abilities, including the U.S. Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. He continues to contribute to the Los Alamos National Laboratory and was a special assistant to the vice provost for research interactions with federal laboratories for the University of New Mexico. Dr. Walters is also a consultant for the Southern Aerospace Company on intellectual property matters.

Dr. Walters was influenced by his parents, as well as a formative chemistry teacher, to pursue his current academic and professional path. A prominent professor in his field, he is notable for his collaborations as well as his impact on graduate and postdoctoral students. Demonstrating considerable knowledge and versatility in the field, he wrote "Contemporary Chemistry" in 1974.

Interested in maintaining connections in his industry, Dr. Walters belongs to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, where he served as a councilor, and the American Vacuum Society. He has been honored in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Dr. Walters was also featured in the 21st and 25th editions of Who's Who in the West.
