Dr. James J. Champoux is a professor and chairman in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dr. Champoux is a professor and chairman in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Accepting the opportunity to teach at the university in 1972 as an assistant professor, he later became an associate professor in 1978 and full professor in 1982. He began serving as chairman in 2007. Focusing his studies on DNA topoisomerases and retroviruses, Dr. Champoux has conducted several research projects in his laboratory relating to the enzymology of nucleic acid synthesis and repair. His long-term goals are to understand the details of reverse transcription and to understand how DNA damage caused by topoisomerases is repaired.
The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for sabbatical studies, Dr. Champoux served as a visiting scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology with David Baltimore between 1980 and 1981. During his career, Dr. Champoux notably co-authored "Medical Microbiology: An Introduction to Infectious Disease," which released its fourth edition in 2004. He has also authored and co-authored more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals in the field of DNA topoisomerases and retroviruses as well.
Dr. Champoux is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy for Microbiology. He is also an active member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. Honored with several awards, Dr. Champoux notably received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Washington in 1985. He has been cited in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the West.
Dr. Champoux received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Washington in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from Stanford University in 1970. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, an independent, non-profit, scientific research institute in La Jolla, CA, from 1970 to 1972. Dr. Champoux is married to Sharon Schultz.
