Q: What does being a Consumer Choice Award Winner mean to you? How did winning the Consumer Choice Award impact your business?
A: It means that we're doing right by our customers first and foremost. Winning this award helps to provide our customers with confidence, knowing they have chosen the right garage door company to do business with.
Q: What are the "core values" of your organization?
A: We have a motto that says "Customer - Company - Self" and what that means is that we put the customer first in all our dealings. The business has to succeed too, so making good business decisions is next followed by our personal needs and agenda. Take care of the customer and the rest follows.
Q: What is ONE characteristic that you believe helped you through your career?
A: A Calm Demeanor. That is the one characteristic that has helped me through. Being a small business owner is not easy and it is important to approach each challenge in a calm, controlled and measured way.
Q: If you could do one thing differently in your business, what would it be?
A: It may seem small but I would have become and remained more involved in our industry and community be it through associations, mentorship, training and industry development.
Q: What makes you/your company successful?
A: It might sound cliche but truly "caring" about our customers has helped us tremendously. It's simple things like a fast response or offering suggestions that will help. Even it means we don't earn revenue from the direction a customer takes, we want to do right by them.
Q: Where do the great ideas come from in your organization? (Team decisions, management decision etc.)
A: We engage our staff every day with an aim to get their opinions, ideas, etc... This business has grown and evolved from those very ideas and opinions.
Q: Does your company use social media? If so, how had it changed your business/organization?
A: We do but not enough. I would say the impact has been more aware of who we are and what we do. We love sharing our work and successes.
Q: How do you keep up with the trends in your industry?
A: For the most part we follow our various industry publications and emails as well as work closely with our vendor partners. We also try and participate in industry events and activities whenever possible.
GETTING TO KNOW DEAN CARMAN:
What gets you out of bed every day?... I love building and developing the business so each day presents a new opportunity for that.
If you could see any artist dead or alive performing, who would it be?... I suppose I would have to say Elvis. Not so much for me, although I would still enjoy it. If I had that power I would do this for my wife.
You've just won the lottery, what is your first biggest purchase?... I would buy my youngest daughter a house and pay off my oldest daughter's house. I would love to give them that security.
Are you or your company involved in your community? (charity, fundraising, etc.)... We've supported the Canuck Place Children's Hospice and hope to continue doing so.
What is your favourite quote?... It's a long one but here goes... "The road to success is not straight. There will be tight curves called Challenges; loop-de-loops called Frustration; speed bumps called Competition; caution lights called Employees and flat out straightaways called Customers. But, if you have a spare with you called Determination; an engine called Perseverance, insurance called your Family and a driver called Faith, you will make it to that place called Success!!!"
