Elizabeth Bowman Peterson Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Elizabeth Bowman Peterson was employed with the San Angelo Independent School District in Texas for 20 years beginning in 1982.

A retired speech pathologist, Ms. Peterson was employed with the San Angelo Independent School District in Texas for 20 years beginning in 1982. A former speech pathologist and resource teacher for the Houston Independent School District between 1970 and 1982, she also worked for the Houston Association in Psychiatry and Neurology and the Houston Speech and Hearing Institute. She devoted 31 years to the field.

Ms. Peterson was a longstanding member of the San Angelo chapter of the Speech and Language Association, the San Angelo Nightwriters Association, the Texas Speech and Hearing Association, the American Speech and Hearing Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Houston Association of Children with Learning Disabilities, which named her Teacher of the Year in 1978, and was the co-founder of Citizens Against Violence in San Angelo. During her career, Ms. Peterson has been active as a member of the advisory board for Spaulding Southwest and the Council on Adoptable Children of Texas, has been active on the Tom Green County Historical Commission and was a volunteer teacher of English as a second language.

In 2018, Ms. Peterson was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from North Dallas High School, which she was cites as a highlight of her career. She has notably been cited in the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.

Born in Dallas, TX, Ms. Peterson contracted polio in the summer after her junior year of high school. Spending her entire senior year in a rehabilitation center in Warm Springs, GA, it was during that time when she decided that she wanted to delve into a field where she could help others. Choosing speech pathology, she worked diligently to earn her degrees, completing a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Southern Methodist University in 1961, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Southern California in 1964. Married to Harold W. Peterson since 1969, Ms. Peterson has two children and five grandchildren.

Professional and community activities included being Co-President of the Houston Council of Adoptable Children in 1977; having certification and membership in the American Speech, Hearing, Languag Association; and in 1993 being trained in Higher Order thinking Skills (HOTS), a Socratic technique to challenge at-risk students to relate facts to something in their own experience and to use them in problem solving. She was listed in Who's Who in the South and Southwest in 1980-1981 and in 1984-1985. She received a research grant in 1993 from the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association and co-authored an article in Language, Speech and Hearing Services journal. In addition, she contributed an article to The Living Church. Currently she is writing her memoirs.
