Mr. Bastine is a former judge who was first appointed to the Spokane County Superior Court in 1995 and later served as presiding judge in 1998. He then served as the first family law judge dedicated to the administration of justice in family law between 1999 and 2000, only to return to the position in 2002. Retired from his full-time judicial role in 2005, Mr. Bastine then spent another five years as a pro tem judge until 2010. Prior to his work as a judge, he was a principal attorney with Bastine, Carroll & Iverson, P.S. and Predecessors in Spokane Valley, WA, between 1978 and 1995 and Lukins, Annis & Bastine, P.S. and Predecessors in Spokane between 1966 and 1978. He worked in private practice for nearly 30 years between 1966 and 1995 and was a deputy prosecuting attorney in Spokane during 1966.

Throughout his professional career, Mr. Bastine served on multiple committees and boards, beginning in 1971 as a member of the Spokane County Legal Services Board for five years. He served on the board of trustees and as president of the Legal Foundation of Washington, co-chaired the Spokane County Law and Justice Council and was vice-chair and chair of the Washington Supreme Court Practice of Law Board. A member and former member of numerous committees with the Washington State Bar between 1973 and 1994, Mr. Bastine is also a past president, trustee, co-chair volunteer and lawyer program committee member of the Spokane County Bar Association. He continues to serve as a private trial judge and mediator. Locally, Mr. Bastine has been involved in a number of capacities with the Peace Corps (Brazil), the Children's Home Society of Washington and the Valley Hospital Foundation Board and Community Board. He has long been serving on the board of advisors for Gonzaga University School of Law since 1985, where he formerly served as trustee of the Gonzaga Law School Foundation from 1986 until 2007.

The recipient of multiple awards and recognitions throughout his career, Mr. Bastine most recently received a Spokane County Bar Association Professionalism Award in 2016. He also received a Distinguished Judicial Service Award from the Gonzaga University School of Law in 2005, was named Judge of the Year by the Washington State Chapter of Trial Advocates in 2004 and received a Goldmark Award for promoting civil legal services for the disadvantaged Legal Foundation of Washington State in 1998, among others. He has been showcased in the 10th edition of Who's Who in American Law and the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West.

Married to Janet E. Harris since February 1966, Mr. Bastine has a daughter, a son, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In retirement, Mr. Bastine enjoys traveling and gardening. He is also very involved in remodeling his lake home. Born in Laramie, WY, Mr. Bastine was motivated by his mother, who was a single mother of three, to receive a good education. Going on to college, upon earning a bachelor's degree, he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Gonzaga University in 1964. He was soon after admitted to the Washington State Bar Association.
