Backed by 50 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. Schmidt has served as an organist with Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX, since 1998 and a professor with Texas State University since 1976. At the inception of his career, he gained valuable expertise in education with New York University as an instructor from 1969 to 1973 and San Antonio College as an adjunct instructor from 1975 to 1977. Over the years, he also held a variety of roles in the music arena with St. Luke's Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, TX, Laurel Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio, TX, St. Mark's Episcopal Church in San Marcos, TX, and First Protestant Church in New Braunfels, TX. Recently, he served as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Texas in 2017. In a career filled with highlights, however, he is especially proud of being the adviser of Phi Mu Alpha, the music fraternity at Texas State University.

An expert in his field, Dr. Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Music from Southwestern University, a Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Philosophy in musicology from New York University. In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, the College Music Society, where he is a lifetime member, and the American Guild of Organists, through which he earned the S. Lewis Elmer Award in 2002 and was elected a fellow.

With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Schmidt authored "The Life and Works of John Knowles Paine" and edited a number of works, including "John Knowles Paine: Three Chamber Works for Piano and Strings." For his excellence in the field, he won the John G. Tower Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005 and the Orpheus Award in 1995, and he was featured in myriad publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. In the near future, Dr. Schmidt intends to experience the continued success of his career.
