Dr. Bruce W. Hapke has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh since 2001.

Prior to his retirement, he was a professor in the department of geology and planetary science with the university from 1967 to 2001. Earlier in his career, he served as a senior research associate at the Cornell University Center for Radiophysics and Space Research from 1960 to 1967.

Dr. Hapke began his career as a student with the University of Wisconsin, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1953. He then joined the United States Naval Reserve, serving to the rank of lieutenant from 1953 to 1955. He subsequently returned to his studies with Cornell University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.

A leading voice in his industry, Dr. Hapke is affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A fellow of the American Geophysical Union, he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Astronomical Society, and the International Astronomical Union. A contributor of articles to professional journals, he has written extensively in his areas of expertise.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hapke has received awards and accolades for his contributions, including having received the Kuiper Prize for Outstanding Contributions to the Planetary Sciences from the American Astronomical Society. The mineral hapkeite was named in his honor, as has the asteroid #3549 Hapke. He was featured in numerous honors publications, including the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
